Divorce is extremely stressful, and most people who are separating have never been through it before.

The first priority is to establish certainty for both parents and, more importantly, the children. Putting a temporary parenting arrangement in place is the first step. Family Law solicitor Des Moore shares what he's learned about helping families navigate this painful time.

Des's qualifications and experience

Des spent most of his childhood and early adult years in the Riverina region. Before turning to law, he was employed in various positions in the rural industry ranging from being a station hand to overseeing livestock on a major property.

He returned to study in his mid-20s. He completed a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Management at the University of Canberra and obtained his Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University.

Des began working with KJB Law at the completion of his studies in August 2002 and became a partner in July 2011.

Having a wife and seven children, Des developed a particular empathy during his studies for those people in the community who required guidance and advice when they found themselves going through a bit of a rough patch in their family circumstances.

These factors combine to motivate Des to practise almost exclusively in the area of family law.

Des’s Law of the Land
“You can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out of the boy," he says.  "Like most in the country, I’ll meet any problem head on and identify or develop a solution using a combination of practicality, creativity and the law.

"Given my background I appreciate that money can be tight, time can be of the essence and there are times that call for diplomacy and times that call for action.

"Regardless of the circumstances I do all that I can to provide a service that is cost effective and sensitive to the needs of all concerned, particularly if children are involved.

"I won’t mince words, lead you up the garden path or baffle you with ‘legal speak’. I’ll simply tell you how it is.”
